On Monday night Azure and Gotham Schools – an independent news source about New York City public schools – hosted ‘The Art of Teaching and Learning to the Common Core.’ The event was held in Azure’s retail space, however, guests also had the opportunity to explore the luxury apartments upstairs. The evening began with a showcase of student artwork before guests were treated to a panel discussion that examined the Common Core standards being implemented in the public school system in many states. The diverse panel included Shael Polakow-Suransky, Chief Academic Officer and Senior Deputy Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education; Mark Anderson, a fourth-year special education teacher who works in the Bronx; and Sandra Stotsky, a nationally known advocate of standards-based reform and an opponent of the Common Core. Each panel member shared their unique position on the effectiveness of the Common Core Standard, educating each other and guests alike. An enlightening soiree indeed!
